I See Horses' Favourite Record: Marquee Moon

It’s probably a bit obvious to choose this album; but it is truly magnificent. Television only made two albums and although 'Adventure', released the following year (1978), is seriously underrated, they set the bar extraordinarily high with their debut. They didn’t put a foot wrong throughout.

Patti Smith said this of Tom Verlaine :“Tom plays guitar like a thousand bluebirds screaming.” The dual lead guitar from Lloyd and Verlaine is probably the signature of the album. It is just beautiful. Even with the 10 minute title track, it never borders on self-indulgence; in fact, it couldn’t be more concise.



The fact that Marquee Moon has been cited as influence by bands spanning many genres and three decades, from Punk to Prog, speaks volumes of its qualities and it certainly doesn't require the likes of us to sing its praises..

Stylusboy's Favourite Record: Everybody Says That You're So Fragile

In the run up to Record Store Day, we will be running a series of posts featuring various members of the Lazy Acre Family talking about their favourite records. This installment features Stylusboy who tells us about his love of Idlewild...

I remember first hearing about Idlewild from a magazine when they had played an In The City event and everyone was talking about how crazy they were but also if they actaully had songs or were just a live band to watch. At the time I was working in a record shop on Saturdays and so I bought Satan Polaroid on 7" and then all the other singles from that first album.



What I love at about this record is the energy but also the feeling of totally being in the band, you can imagine them playing it in a tiny little room with the guys recording it smiling all over their faces. I really like the styling of this cover and the whole image of each single being pretty similar. I have a big love for Idlewild. I have seen them a nunber of times. From the early days where they just went mad and jumped all over the place to more recent shows where Roddy sings amazingly well with the soulful tunes.

Stylusboy will be streaming a live set on this minisite from 8pm this evening and will be releasing a specially recorded single "Jigsaw" at the conclusion of his set

Uno's Favourite Record: Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness....

I remember seeing the 'Bullet With Butterfly Wings' video on TV when it first came out, and my jaw dropped to the ground. I was only into punk at the time, like NOFX, Propagandhi, Pennywise and those kind of bands. I got my dad to buy me the album right away. Of all the 28 tracks on the album, I only liked 'Bullet…' at first.

Slowly one song after another started to grow on me and became more and more amazing, and it turned out to be an album that really opened the door into a new world for me, both in music and in everything else. Every time I hear the first piano chord of 'Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness', I'm right back to some strange magical place, like the first time I heard it. Still, today, it's one of my absolute favourite albums.



I don't listen to it that much anymore, but when I do, I can't listen to anything else for a week. I think it still stands out and sounds great and interesting. And I still discover new elements and clever details in the songs that you rarely find in music today. I love everything about it! The cover art, the videos, the 'aeroplane flies high' single box…everything!

Laura's Favorite Record: Grace

Last summer, I started doing a feature for the 405 called "What We Talk About When We Talk About Music"; a tribute to Raymond Carver and at the same time, a way to interview musicians I come across shortly to ask them about their influences. As I was talking to Joanna Newsom's musical director Ryan (Francesconi), he asked me out of the blue: "So, and now - what's YOUR favorite record?" It took me by surprise, and after a couple of minutes where I stood mouth open, thinking of all the albums that have meant something in my life from my teenage years up until now, I sort of winked and said, "Easy. Grace, by Jeff Buckley".
To everyone who knows me at least a little bit, this might seem like an obvious answer. And though it might be, it is also tricky to call favorite album of all-time a record which is spending way more time on your shelf collecting dust than in your record player. The truth is, I now tend to listen to Jeff Buckley on very few (and special) occasions, as if the timing, the situation, all the particles in the air and the temperature and the mood and the light in the room had to be just right before pulling it out of its case, reverently, as if touching a sacred object.



I discovered Jeff Buckley by chance, reading up an article about him in a now defunct Italian music magazine, when I was thirteen. I still own that magazine and remember that moment - a day in November 1999 - as a turning point in my life. Some days later, I scanned a couple of music stores until I actually found the CD; then took it home right away and listened to it. On repeat. Day after day after week after month. And looking back, I don't think any other album has taught me as much as Grace has; it is, from beginning to end, a jewel, a masterpiece, a record that touches on so many influences and so many subjects, a timeless work of genius that makes me feel so much, still, from the upbeat title track to the nostalgic Lover You Should've Come Over, from the bitter Last Goodbye to the bizarre Lilac Wine, all the way through to the sweaty psychedelic Eternal Life and the ethereal Dream Brother.

Grace is the kind of record every musician wishes he had written; Grace is music that stays with you forever.

Lazy Acre Records celebrates Record Store Day

Ever a fan of jumping on the nearest bandwagon Lazy Acre Records will celebrate this weekends Record Store Day by not stepping foot out of its front door. See as a label that doesn't produce vinyl and has no artists within 500 miles of our nearest record store it made arranging some kind of happening rather difficult.

Instead Lazy Acre will celebrate by running a series of events and sessions in its own webstore throughout the day. Beginning at Midday on Saturday, Lazy Acre artists will be broadcasting live sessions and shows from across the globe. Kicking off with new signing Stylusboy (who will be broadcasting from the UK), the day will also take in acoustic sets from Uno Moller (live from Oslo) and Sajama Cut (live from Jakarta) before finishing off with a headline set from MyLittlePony who will be broadcasting from Vienna.

Its a truly international happening and one that will be accompanied by a series of limited time releases (including a new MyLittlePony single, a special edition Stylusboy single with "When I Argue I See Shapes" on the B-side, a UK release for "Paintings / Pantings" from Sajama Cut and a new Uno Moller release that is so secret we won't be announcing details until the day.)

These download singles will all be priced at £2 each (or £6 for them all) and will include videos, a copy of the latest Lazy Acre fanzine and some PC wallpaper. They will be available for 2 weeks from the day of release.

Throughout the course of the day there will also be competitions, video premier's, exclusive interviews and content and 25% off everything in the webstore.
